Sugar House is one of Salt Lake City's most eclectic well-known neighborhoods.
Often referred to as Salt Lake’s “second downtown,” Sugar House is a vibrant, walkable neighborhood known for its eclectic mix of people, history, trendy boutiques, and open green spaces. Originally established in the 1800s, Sugar House was named after the sugar beet factory that was in operation there in the 1850s.
Sugar House offers everything from artisan bakeries and independent bookshops to lively bars and art galleries, making it an ideal spot to explore, unwind, and enjoy some of the best local vibes in Salt Lake City. Bounded by 1300 East and 3000 South, the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets lead to parks, bustling local businesses, and scenic views of the nearby Wasatch Mountains.
Here are some of our favorite spots in Sugar House:
Sugar House Park
The heart of the neighborhood, Sugar House Park, offers over 110 acres of open green space with beautiful views of the Wasatch Mountains. Perfect for picnics, jogging, or just relaxing, this park is a community hub where you’ll find locals walking dogs, flying kites, and enjoying the creek that runs through the park. In winter, the park’s hills are a popular spot for sledding.
Dodo Restaurant
The Dodo is a unique neighborhood restaurant across the street from Sugar House Park. It has served as a casual upscale gathering place for SLC locals since 1981. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner – or treat yourself to one of their award-winning desserts.
Tea Zaanti
Tea Zaanti is Salt Lake’s only tea and wine restaurant. Voted Salt Lake’s best tea house, it is a unique and pleasant environment for sipping some high quality (yet affordable!) drinks.
Hopkins Brewing Company
Hopkins Brewing is a chill brick-lined brewery featuring live music and events. Much of their menu is made from scratch from local ingredients every day. Their award-winning beer is also made from locally grown grains here in Salt Lake City.
Mint Sushi
Multiple award-winning upscale restaurant Mint Sushi is known for artistic dishes and exquisite flavors. They even offer a mixology masterclass where you can craft your own cocktails and enjoy sushi. Additionally, you can take sushi making classes or enjoy a 10-course tasting menu.
Hidden Hollow Nature Area
Tucked behind the busy Sugar House shopping district, Hidden Hollow is a quiet natural oasis with walking paths, native plants, a stream and connects to Sugar House Park. This small urban nature reserve offers a quick escape to nature without leaving the neighborhood.
Sugar House Coffee
Known for its warm atmosphere and community vibe, Sugar House Coffee is where locals go to gather, work, or catch up with friends. The coffee is exceptional, and the relaxed environment makes it a perfect hangout spot. Sugar House Coffee is a well-known LGBTQ+ friendly business that regularly hosts open mic nights.
S-Line (Formerly Sugar House Streetcar)
Unique to the neighborhood, the S-Line provides easy access to the business district from nearby South Salt Lake.
